Eat Pray Love and Network Marketing

By JanJanzen | August 30, 2010

Eat Pray LoveWhen Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Eat Pray Love hit bookstores in 2007, women clamored to read this enchanting tale of a woman’s jaunt around the world “to find herself” after a bitter divorce.

As many of us related to her struggle to discover her purpose amidst a demanding career and a broken heart, Gilbert brought us in touch with our own dreams. Following her travels to Italy where she regained her appetite for food and life, followed by 4 months in India to secure her spiritual connection and finally to Bali where she found love and bliss, most of us were ready to pack our suitcases and book the next flight out!

Fortunately, as I read Eat Pray Love, I was about to embark on what has now been almost three years as the “sunshine gypsy” which has taken me to exotic places around the world.

For most people however, it sounds romantic and wonderful in a book, but in reality, it feels like a lifetime away. And so most put aside the dreams, sigh deeply and think it can’t happen to them. But they’re wrong.

The biggest challenge is usually money. It will almost always come down to finances. How do you afford to live the life of your dreams when the economy is in the toilet, there are bills to pay and more month than there is money?

It’s called network marketing. Given a very bad rap for decades, today network marketing is an answer to leveraging your time, resources and even your money. It is a ticket to freedom if worked properly. Even the big boys like Warren Buffett, Donald Trump and Richard Branson are involved, each of them owning their own network marketing company. Why? Because they understand the power of leverage. It’s how they’ve made their billions.

Leveraged income means you don’t trade time for dollars. Robert Kiyosaki describes it in a four quadrant chart with E for Employee, S for Self-Employed, B for Business and I for Investor. In the E quadrant, every employee is trading their time, their most precious commodity, for dollars. In the S quadrant, most entrepreneurs find themselves having “bought” a job as they work long hours, do more things themselves than they should and often squeeze out a pathetic income. It is only when you move into the B quadrant do you begin to leverage your time and money.

Leverage is an important aspect of getting what you want – like travelling around the world for a few years or volunteering in Africa on a project that is important to you. It means that you take something small – such as a few hours a week or a small sum of money – and you turn it into something much bigger.

People do this all the time when they purchase a house. Their relatively small down-payment leverages them into a house of much greater value. You need to do the same thing with your time and money to achieve the time and money freedom you deserve and desire.

How does network marketing do this? You take a small amount of money (usually less than $500) to buy yourself a business that honestly, could make you millions of dollars. Try doing that with a McDonalds or Subway franchise! You’ve just leveraged your money. Then by building a team that duplicates your efforts, you leverage your time. You don’t do it all alone but rather you train people in a system so everything can be easily duplicated.

Can you achieve freedom through network marketing? Yes, done properly, you can be earning leveraged income while shopping in Hong Kong, visiting temples in Thailand or climbing the pyramids in Egypt. You can manage your business from anywhere in the world with just a few hours of work a week and enjoy incredible financial and time freedom.

You won’t do this the first week, month or even the first year. But with a few years of systematic effort, determination and a clear goal of what your journey looks like, you too could be galavanting through Europe on a motorcycle, sailing through the Caribbean or hiking through the Himalayas. You may also want to follow Elizabeth’s journey to Italy, India and Bali. Anything is possible with network marketing!
